Special competition procedure

 Rules of entry for beneficiaries of grants and international research projects in which the Jagiellonian University or JU Medical College is a party to the contract, obliging the beneficiary selected in a competition to participate in the doctoral program, without the candidate’s participation in the recruitment procedure

Special Admission Procedure

A special admission procedure may be launched provided that the project/grant budget includes PLN 250,000 (gross) to cover the doctoral scholarship for a doctoral candidate enrolled in the 8-semester interdisciplinary programme of the Doctoral School of Medical and Health Sciences, and that appropriate conditions are ensured for the implementation of the research project and the doctoral education programme offered by the Doctoral School.

The Principal Investigator (PI) of the project/grant submits a request to the Director of the Doctoral School to launch a special admission procedure, indicating any specific conditions or restrictions imposed by the funding agency and providing a declaration confirming the availability of the necessary financial and organisational resources.

The application is verified by the Research Support Office to ensure compliance with the project requirements.

The Director of the Doctoral School grants approval for the launch of the special admission procedure by issuing a decision/announcement specifying the recruitment procedure for the particular project. The procedure shall include the following requirements:

• the admissions committee must include a representative of the Doctoral School Council; the Principal Investigator may nominate a preferred representative, for example on the basis of expertise relevant to the research project, while the final decision regarding the appointment rests with the Principal Investigator;

• verification that sufficient funding and a four-year period of financial support are guaranteed to enable the candidate to complete doctoral education and prepare the doctoral dissertation;

• compliance with the provisions on the avoidance of conflicts of interest in the admission procedure (Section 3(9) of the Senate Resolution).

The Principal Investigator publishes the call for applications (on the NCN website, the Doctoral School website, and the Research Support Office website).

The Principal Investigator proposes the composition of the admissions committee, consisting of:

• the Principal Investigator,

• a representative of the Doctoral School Council,

• two or three additional committee members.

The Head of the Organisational Unit (the Plenipotentiary of the Vice-Rector for Medical College for Research and Infrastructure) approves the composition of the admissions committee and formally appoints its members.

Upon completion of the recruitment procedure, the Principal Investigator informs both the Head of the Organisational Unit and the Director of the Doctoral School of the outcome.

Candidates admitted through the special admission procedure commence their doctoral education at the beginning of the first semester following the completion of the recruitment process, unless, in justified cases, the Director of the Doctoral School specifies an earlier starting date.

The rule limiting the submission to one research topic per discipline applies exclusively to the regular admission procedure. Under the special admission procedure, where the doctoral scholarship is fully financed from external funds, the number of admitted doctoral candidates should correspond to the number of positions provided for in the externally funded project. In such cases, the Principal Investigator may serve as the supervisor of more than one doctoral candidate within the same doctoral programme.

Recruitment to the Doctoral School of Medical and Health Sciences under the special admission procedure is conducted throughout the academic year.
